The overlay assumes that the lix thingy that is passed contains a rev attribute, which may not be present when patching the source with pkgs.applyPatches for example.
I think it should be mentioned somewhere whant kind of input is expected

it probably should tolerate your use case. patches encouraged! (though you probably want some kind of source revision so you know what you're running!)
