considering there's not a better spot to put this that i can think of, it seems ok to me. it might be nice to add a repl characterization test validating this, along with an html comment saying to update that test when you change the docs.

which would both keep us honest with respect to the repl-overlays stuff working as intended and in terms of our docs.
