This is low-cost code but removing it at the moment would break compatibility with glibc 2.38 which is current in debian unstable as of this writing which would make Lix unnecessarily a lot harder to build on Debian.

The patch to remove it, which is marked abandoned but can be resurrected when it is ready: https://gerrit.lix.systems/c/lix/+/1451
