eldritch horrors 0b9a72524a filetransfer: {up,down}load -> transfer
even the transfer function is not all that necessary since there aren't
that many users, but we'll keep it for now. we could've kept both names
but we also kind of want to use `download` for something else very soon

Qyriad ee5a1b5a4c nix3-upgrade-nix: allow manually specifying new nix
This allows manually specifying a store path for the new Nix that
gets linked into Nix's profile.

Qyriad aae12f5848 fix nix upgrade-nix on new-style profiles
nix3-profile automatically migrates any profile its used on to its style
of profile -- the ones with manifest.json instead of manifest.nix. On
non-NixOS systems, Nix is conventionally installed to the profile at
/nix/var/nix/profiles/default, so if a user passed that to `--profile`
of `nix profile`, then it would break upgrade-nix from ever working
again, without recreating the profile.

This commit fixes that, and allows upgrade-nix to work on either kind of
profile.

Fixes #16.

jade 61e21b2557 Delete hasPrefix and hasSuffix from the codebase
These now have equivalents in the standard lib in C++20. This change was
performed with a custom clang-tidy check which I will submit later.
Executed like so:

ninja -C build && run-clang-tidy -checks='-*,nix-*' -load=build/libnix-clang-tidy.so -p .. -fix ../tests | tee -a clang-tidy-result

Eelco Dolstra 94812cca98 Backport SourcePath from the lazy-trees branch
This introduces the SourcePath type from lazy-trees as an abstraction
for accessing files from inputs that may not be materialized in the
real filesystem (e.g. Git repositories). Currently, however, it's just
a wrapper around CanonPath, so it shouldn't change any behaviour. (On
lazy-trees, SourcePath is a <InputAccessor, CanonPath> tuple.)

Eelco Dolstra 8d4268d190 Improve error formatting
Changes:

* The divider lines are gone. These were in practice a bit confusing,
  in particular with --show-trace or --keep-going, since then there
  were multiple lines, suggesting a start/end which wasn't the case.

* Instead, multi-line error messages are now indented to align with
  the prefix (e.g. "error: ").

* The 'description' field is gone since we weren't really using it.

* 'hint' is renamed to 'msg' since it really wasn't a hint.

* The error is now printed *before* the location info.

* The 'name' field is no longer printed since most of the time it
  wasn't very useful since it was just the name of the exception (like
  EvalError). Ideally in the future this would be a unique, easily
  googleable error ID (like rustc).

* "trace:" is now just "…". This assumes error contexts start with
  something like "while doing X".

Example before:

  error: --- AssertionError ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- nix
  at: (7:7) in file: /home/eelco/Dev/nixpkgs/pkgs/applications/misc/hello/default.nix

       6|
       7|   x = assert false; 1;
        |       ^
       8|

  assertion 'false' failed
  ----------------------------------------------------- show-trace -----------------------------------------------------
  trace: while evaluating the attribute 'x' of the derivation 'hello-2.10'
  at: (192:11) in file: /home/eelco/Dev/nixpkgs/pkgs/stdenv/generic/make-derivation.nix

     191|         // (lib.optionalAttrs (!(attrs ? name) && attrs ? pname && attrs ? version)) {
     192|           name = "${attrs.pname}-${attrs.version}";
        |           ^
     193|         } // (lib.optionalAttrs (stdenv.hostPlatform != stdenv.buildPlatform && !dontAddHostSuffix && (attrs ? name || (attrs ? pname && attrs ? version)))) {

Example after:

  error: assertion 'false' failed

         at: (7:7) in file: /home/eelco/Dev/nixpkgs/pkgs/applications/misc/hello/default.nix

              6|

               |       ^
              8|

         … while evaluating the attribute 'x' of the derivation 'hello-2.10'

Eelco Dolstra bbe97dff8b Make the Store API more type-safe
Most functions now take a StorePath argument rather than a Path (which
is just an alias for std::string). The StorePath constructor ensures
that the path is syntactically correct (i.e. it looks like
<store-dir>/<base32-hash>-<name>). Similarly, functions like
buildPaths() now take a StorePathWithOutputs, rather than abusing Path
by adding a '!<outputs>' suffix.

Note that the StorePath type is implemented in Rust. This involves
some hackery to allow Rust values to be used directly in C++, via a
helper type whose destructor calls the Rust type's drop()
function. The main issue is the dynamic nature of C++ move semantics:
after we have moved a Rust value, we should not call the drop function
on the original value. So when we move a value, we set the original
value to bitwise zero, and the destructor only calls drop() if the
value is not bitwise zero. This should be sufficient for most types.

Also lots of minor cleanups to the C++ API to make it more modern
(e.g. using std::optional and std::string_view in some places).

upgrade-nix: resolve profile symlinks
The profile present in PATH is not necessarily the actual profile
location. User profiles are generally added as $HOME/.nix-profile
in which case the indirect profile link needs to be resolved first.

/home/user/.nix-profile -> /nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/user/profile
/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/user/profile -> profile-15-link
/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/user/profile-14-link -> /nix/store/hyi4kkjh3bwi2z3wfljrkfymz9904h62-user-environment
/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/user/profile-15-link -> /nix/store/6njpl3qvihz46vj911pwx7hfcvwhifl9-user-environment

To upgrade nix here we want /nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/user/profile-16-link
instead of /home/user/.nix-profile-1-link. The latter is not a gcroot
and would be garbage collected, resulting in a broken profile.

Move EvalState from the stack to the heap
EvalState contains a few counters (e.g. nrValues) that increase
quickly enough that they end up being interpreted as pointers by the
garbage collector. Moving it to the heap makes them invisible to the
garbage collector.

This reduces the max RSS doing 100 evaluations of
nixos.tests.firefox.x86_64-linux.drvPath from 455 MiB to 292 MiB.

Note: ideally, allocations would be much further up in the 64-bit
address space to reduce the odds of an integer being misinterpreted as
a pointer. Maybe we can use some linker magic to move the .bss segment
to a higher address.
